Start with one viewpoint, one temple, one beach

Phuket is bigger than it looks on the map — about an hour from top to bottom — and trying to do everything in one trip is the most common mistake. For a three- to five-day visit, the trick is to pick one of each: one viewpoint, one temple, one beach, and let the rest of the day breathe.

A good day-one combination is Big Buddha for the view, Wat Chalong for the temple, and either Kata or Nai Harn for the beach. All three sit on the south of the island and link neatly together.

Spend half a day in Old Town

Most visitors stay on the west-coast beaches and never see the historic centre. Phuket Town is only 30 minutes from Patong but feels like a different country — Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Hokkien-Chinese shrines and the island's best coffee scene.

Half a day is enough for a slow walk along Thalang Road, the Thai Hua Museum and lunch at one of the heritage cafés. Sundays are extra fun: the Lardyai Walking Street market takes over Thalang from late afternoon.

Add one island day — but only one

Phuket is your base; the islands are the day trip. Phi Phi gets the headlines but the crossing is long and the boats are full; Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island plus canoeing) is the more photogenic day if you only do one.

Coral Island is the right answer if you're short on time — 15 minutes by speedboat and you're on a clear-water beach.

Leave a day unscheduled

The best day of most Phuket trips is the one with no plan: a slow breakfast, a swim, lunch wherever you end up. Don't book every day.
