Rainy Day in Phuket — What to Do When the Beach Isn't an Option

Phuket's wet season runs May to October. Here's what to do on the rainy days — written by a local guide.
Why a rainy day in Phuket isn't a write-off
Phuket's wet season is misunderstood. Most "rainy" days are short, intense showers separated by long warm spells — not a Vietnamese-style monsoon. The trick is to plan an indoor anchor for the morning and stay flexible in the afternoon.
Old Town and the museums
Phuket Old Town is the best rainy-day move on the island. Cafés, museums (Thai Hua, Peranakanitat) and shophouses are all within a few covered blocks. Half a day passes quickly without setting foot on a beach.
Temples and shrines
Wat Chalong and the major Chinese shrines are largely covered and quieter in the rain. A cultural tour day actually benefits from grey weather — softer light, fewer crowds.
Cooking class or spa
A morning Thai cooking class (our network sister site
runs these) followed by a long afternoon spa is the unofficial Phuket rainy-day routine for repeat visitors.
When not to push it
Skip the island day if it's properly grey — boats still run, but the photos won't be the ones you came for. Move the island day to a clearer slot and use the rain day on land.
